The Whale Shark, the largest fish in the world.
The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish in the world, reaching up to 20m (60 feet). Frequently, its name and huge size cause people to confuse them with whales. Unlike whales, wich breathe oxygen from the air, whale sharks obtain oxygen through their gills, just like fish and other sharks.What makes whale sharks different from other sharks is that whale sharks do not eat meal, but consume tiny animals floating in the sea, called plankton. In feeding habit, they are similar to most or the larges whales, catching this tiny floating plankton by opening their mouths and letting in large amounts of seawater and passing it through a filtering structure located on their gills.
Whale shark live in all tropical and subtropical seas and are know to travel great distances. We do not know how many of their biology and behavior, such as, where they migrate and where and how thwy reproduce. Mexico is one of the few contries with the privilege of having visits of these magnificent animals. They can be found in the Gulf on California , on the south-Southeast side of Bahia de La Paz they are present from April to June and October to January.
Whale shark meet in large numbers in Bahia de La Paz, giving people from all over the world an opportunity to experience one of the most exciting encounters between people and nature. Unlike other shark, diving among whale sharks is safe because of their exceptionally gentle nature. Ecotouristm can get relatively close to these giants and enjoy a memorable experience, providing they adhere to certain rules.
When you are in the whale shark aggregation zone of Bahia de La Paz during the sighting season, the following rules of conduct must be followed by tourist:
- It is necesary to go with a guide and limit the number of tourist to 6 persons near a shark.
- Do not use flash when taking pictures.
- Do not touch the sharks.
- Stay at least 2m (6 feet) from the shark´s tail and 1m (5 feet) from their head.
- Do not thow trash into the water.
- Do not interfere when there are scientist investigating the animals.

Tiburon Ballena, el pez mas grande del planeta.
El tiburón ballena (Rhincodon typus) es el pez mas grande del planeta, puede llegar a medir hasta 20m. A diferencia de las ballenas, que repiran el oxigeno del aire con sus pulmones , los tiburones ballenas absorben el oxigeno directamente del agua por medio de branquias; y lo que lo hace diferente a los tiburones es que estos no se alimentan de carne como lo hacen la mayoria de los tiburones, si no de Plancton, animales microscopicos que se encuentran flotando en el agua de mar que succionan y filtran en una especie de red que se encuentra en sus branquias. Viven en los mares tropicales y templados del mundo y se conocen por viajar a grandes distancias. Mexico es uno de los paises que tiene el privilegio de contar con la visita de estos magnificos animales. Se les puede encontrar en zona sur y sureste de la Bahia de La Paz, y se les puede encontrar durante los meses de abril-junio y octubre-enero.Las reuniones de los tiburones ballena en la Bahía de la Paz proporcionan a personas de todo el mundo la oportunidad de experimentar uno de los encuentros más emocionantes entre el hombre y la naturaleza. A diferencia de otro tipo de buceos con tiburones, el avistamiento de tiburón ballena es excepcional debido a la naturaleza gentil de estos gigantes, por lo que los turistas son capaces de experimentar un acercamiento mayor con los animales, lo cual hace de esta actividad una opción muy atractiva.
El nado con tiburón ballena se realiza en la superficie del mar, con chalecos salvavidas snorkel y aletas. Es una experiencia emocionante y segura, sin embargo, al tratarse de un animal salvaje, tanto los turistas, como los prestadores del servicio deben seguir una serie de reglas sencillas que garanticen su seguridad, el disfrute de la actividad y el cuidado de los animales.
En la Bahía de la Paz cuando te encuentres en la zona de agregación del tiburón ballena y durante los meses en que se agrega, se deben de seguir los siguientes códigos de conducta para Turistas:
- Máximo 6 turista por tiburón y es necesario ir con un guía.
- No tomes fotografías con flash
- No toques a los tiburones
- Mantente a una distancia de 2 m. de la cola y 1 m. de la cabeza
- No tires basura
- Respeta cuando se estén haciendo acciones de investigación con los animales
